Comprehensive Care Options

Dental Cleanings / Checkup

Regular dental cleanings are one of the most important things you can do to improve and maintain the health of your teeth and gums. We recommend a regular patient in our office to get two cleanings a year.

During your checkup and cleaning, Dr Daniel will thoroughly examine your mouth for any problems like cavities or receding gums. We may also take X-rays to check for problems including impacted teeth, abscesses, or decay between the teeth.

Our great hygienists will remove any plaque, tartar and stain. They will polish and floss your teeth, leaving you with a clean, healthy smile.

Most cleanings are done comfortably with no pain at all. If you are nervous about any discomfort, let us know. We may use a topical anesthetic to make you more comfortable.

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are porcelain teeth that fit over your natural teeth and improve your smile and chewing function. Unlike dentures, which can be taken out, crowns and bridges are permanently cemented over your natural teeth or implants.

There are several reasons we may recommend a crown:

  • Restore a cracked or fractured tooth
  • Strengthen a tooth compromised by a big filling and/or decay
  • Improve the appearance of a discolored / poorly shaped tooth
  • Increase the longevity of a tooth that has had a root canal

Bridges help to replace missing teeth and connect to the teeth on either side of the gap. It is important to fill these gaps, as missing teeth cause the surrounding teeth to shift over time, damaging your bite.

Fillings

When a tooth has been harmed or damaged by trauma or decay, fillings are commonly used to restore its function. Dental fillings help prevent further decay by sealing off any cracks or crevices where bacteria could spread.

Dr. Daniel uses composite (tooth colored) filling material to fix his patients’ teeth when a filling is indicated. Composite is a realistic resin material that replaces your natural tooth that has been damaged from decay or trauma. We carry a variety of shades to match your custom tooth color and get the best result.

What to Expect When Getting a Filling

  • We first examine the tooth to assess the severity of the decay. Sometimes we may take an X-ray to get a better look.

  • On the day of the procedure, we administer local anesthesia, then use a dental handpiece to remove the damaged tooth structure and clean the cavity.

  • Next, the area will be cleaned of all bacteria and debris, followed by cement that bonds the tooth and the filling. After placing the filling, we sculpt it to fit the tooth’s natural shape.

  • After the procedure, avoid eating on the side of the filling for two hours. Some sensitivity to hot and cold is normal, but if it continues for more than two weeks or you feel any pain, we may need to adjust the filling.

  • Depending on the filling material and how well it is maintained, it can last 5 to 20 years.

How to Maintain the filling afterwards

After finishing your dental filling, it is important to brush and floss around that area to keep plaque away. Over time, plaque and bacteria can breakdown the edges of a filling and cause decay underneath it. Keeping the area as clean as possible can prolong the life of your dental work and preserve the investment you made in your oral health!

Dentures / Partials

Regardless of your age, dentures are an excellent solution to replace missing teeth. Dentures can bring your smile back by making your face more full-looking as well as restoring your ability to eat and speak. If you have lost some or all of your teeth, you should consider full dentures or partials.

What is a denture?

Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Our dentures and partials are made at a lab in Gainesville GA that does an excellent job at creating a realistic and long-lasting product.

Types of Dentures

At Foothills Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we provide two types of dentures:

  • Complete dentures: These replace your teeth when you have lost all lower teeth, all upper teeth, or both. The dentures are molded to fit your mouth and replace your natural teeth. Complete dentures are typically removable and may need adjustments to ensure a proper fit with the gums and mouth.
  • Partial dentures: You are a good fit for partials if you are missing some but not all teeth. The replacement teeth are attached to a gum-colored plastic base that connects to your other teeth to help restore better functionality to the mouth.

Benefits of Dentures and Partials

Here are just a few ways that a denture can improve your quality of life:

  • Increased Chewing Ability: A denture can make eating your meals so much easier and enjoyable.
  • Smile with Confidence: Enjoy a fresh new smile that will improve your overall appearance.
Easy to Clean: Since they are removable, dentures and partials can easily be cleaned outside the mouth to keep them fresh and long-lasting.
Oral Surgery

At our office, Dr. Daniel will do everything he can to save and preserve your teeth. Sometimes, conservative methods will not work and the best long-term option is to remove your tooth.

Tooth extractions at Foothills Dentistry are a common dental procedure. Although most extractions are simple and straightforward, some may be more complicated. Complications can arise if the tooth is broken, infected, or impacted. Impacted teeth are those that have not erupted through the gum line or have only partially erupted. The most common type of impacted tooth is the third molar, also known as the wisdom tooth. Tooth extractions may also be necessary if you have an overcrowded mouth or if you need to make room for orthodontic treatment. Local anesthesia will be used to numb the area around the tooth. For more complex cases, general anesthesia may be necessary. Recovery from a tooth extraction is usually fairly quick and uncomplicated. However, it is important to follow your dentist's instructions for care after the procedure to promote healing and avoid complications.

Implants

Today’s dental implant techniques in Dillard, GA offer a wide range of tooth replacement solutions including:

  • Single tooth replacement
  • Multiple tooth replacement
  • Implant-supported dentures

Single tooth implants are very common. Implants match the size, shape and function of your natural teeth. Implants replace the root of the tooth in the bone. It is the best possible replacement for a missing tooth.

After an implant is placed in your mouth, it typically takes 3 months for the bone to heal around it. This is called osseointegration. Once healing is complete, your tooth or crown can be added above the gums to complete your implant.

If you are having a tooth removed and want an implant to replace it, Dr. Daniel may recommend that he place a bone graft in your tooth socket. A bone graft is a mixture of organic materials that eventually turn into bone. This process takes 3 to 4 months, and allows for enough bone to place an adequate size implant.

One important benefit of dental implants is that they slow the shrinking of bone (resorption) and gum tissue from the area of the missing tooth or teeth, thus preventing the sunken-face look of premature aging and maintaining the health of the surrounding teeth. Teeth will tip or move forward into areas where teeth are missing which can alter and disrupt proper biting.

When multiple teeth in the same area are missing, an implant-supported bridge can be a great option for replacement. This allows for a fixed bridge that is held in place by two or more implants that are placed where the roots used to be.

Implants can also be used to support partials and dentures. Implants are placed beneath the denture and attached with components designed to improve the fit and function of the denture.

Root Canals

A root canal is a treatment used to save a tooth that has become infected from several causes:

  • Deep decay that has reached the nerve, or innermost part of your tooth
  • A fracture from previous dental work, trauma to the face, or chewing too hard over time.

Regardless of the reason of your tooth’s infection, a root canal is a great treatment to restore your tooth’s health and allow you to keep it. The procedure is sometimes performed in two steps to allow the tooth plenty of time to heal from its infection.

Dr. Daniel performs root canals at Foothills Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, and treats most teeth in your mouth, including most molars.

Root canal procedures have the reputation of being painful. But the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed.

Veneers

Restore your Smile

For those looking to improve their smile, veneers are a perfect way to drastically improve the appearance of your teeth. They are thin, enamel-like casings that cover your front teeth. Veneers are stain-resistant and are indistinguishable from real teeth.

Are Veneers right for You?

Veneers alter and improve the shape, color, and size of your teeth. Veneers can improve any of the following characteristics of your teeth:

-Discolored or whitening-resistant teeth

-Broken or chipped teeth

-Worn-down teeth

-Teeth with gaps

-Crooked or irregular shaped teeth

-Teeth with stained large fillings

Veneer Types

There are two types of veneers: porcelain and composite. Both veneer types have their advantages.

Porcelain: These are lab-made and hold up best long-term. They are more costly, but give the best look and do not stain.

Composite: These are bonded onto your teeth and made the day of your appointment. They are less expensive, and tend to stain over time.

Veneers vs. Crowns / Braces

Veneers are not always the best cosmetic solution for your teeth. Orthodontics could be indicated in situations where the gaps and spacing between your teeth are too big for veneers to fill in. It may be preferable to reconstruct your teeth with crowns that completely encase the tooth if you have significant loss of tooth structure due to trauma or decay.

Our Veneer Process

Evaluation: Dr. Daniel will take a thorough look at your teeth and we will most likely take x-rays, and decide if veneers are the best option for you.

Day of Service: Dr. Daniel will remove a very thin layer of enamel from the front side of your teeth and scan them with an intraoral camera to send your case to the lab for fabrication. He and his team will make temporary veneers until your veneers are back from the lab. This usually takes 2 weeks.

Finishing: After your veneers are back, our team will remove your temporaries and try in your permanent veneers. We will make sure that you are happy with the shape, color, and overall appearance. Using a resin bonded cement, we will light cure your veneers onto your teeth and smooth around all edges.

Aftercare

Taking care of your veneers is vital to their success long-term in your mouth. Regular brushing and flossing, along with your cleanings and checkups, will ensure that your investment will last for years to come. Veneers can last up to 15 years or more with proper care.

Teeth Whitening

Many people ask us what they can do to whiten their teeth. We offer two ways to whiten:

  • Custom-made whitening trays: Our team will make impressions of your upper and lower teeth and make trays to custom fit your teeth. Bleach material comes with your take-home kit and you can bleach at home until you are happy with the new shade of your teeth.
  • Stock whitening trays: We offer a take-home bleaching kit called Opalescence Go, which is a series of 10 trays that fit around your upper and lower teeth. They are less expensive than custom trays. The only disadvantage is you do not have custom trays to use for future bleaching.
Periodontal Therapy

Renew your Oral Health

Periodontal disease or gum disease is inflammation of the gum tissues and bone that hold your teeth in place. In more severe cases, it can spread from the gums to the bone that supports the teeth, and may even cause tooth loss. With appropriate and timely periodontal therapy here at Foothills Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, you can manage and even reverse periodontitis.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Bacterial buildup is the main cause of gum disease / periodontal disease. It accumulates in between your teeth and turns into tartar / calculus. This is a bacterial breeding ground, and can destroy and gum tissue and bone surrounding your teeth.

Gingivitis vs. Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is gum inflammation due to poor oral hygiene and lack of regular dental care. Periodontal disease is gum disease that has progressed into bone loss around your teeth.

Signs of Gum Disease

  • Painful, swollen gums
  • Red inflamed gums that bleed when flossing
  • Bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

Periodontal Disease Linked to Overall Health

The bad bacteria that causes bone loss and inflamed gums can infiltrate your blood stream and contribute to Strokes, Arthritis, Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Respiratory Disease

Periodontal Therapy

At our office, we treat periodontal disease to restore the health of your teeth and gums. We treat your condition by thoroughly deep cleaning the tartar off your tooth surfaces above and below the gums. This process sometimes requires local numbing to ensure you are comfortable. If that is the case, Dr. Daniel will numb your teeth and surrounding gums on the day of treatment.
